For years, MekTek.net has been the central point for online distribution of MechWarrior 4 expansion packs. Now they can provide the core game free to the fans as well. What about the key codes? If all the downloads have the same codes there will be problems. Also, will there be a patch for installation on Vista and Win 7? Vista is problematic to say the least for MW4. Some people still have XP but very few have Win 98.
I have vista and have ran MW4 with no problems.
and i know of a couple of people using win7 no problem
Have you considered distributing it as a .torrent rather than as a binary blob – I imagine that given the enthusiasm for MW4 on fark.com and slashdot.org (to name two examples) – the bandwidth bills for hosting the files are going to be not insubstantial.
Make sure to have a patch for xp and vista.

yep…goosebumps…to know that soon the multiplayer servers in mw4:mercs may be filling with new/returning pilots is beyond exciting.

Hoping for maybe switch to .exe installer, rather than iso…hope for nocd launching built-in…hope for no key management…hope for mech paks (i own both, but only one copy of each).
Also, for anyone who’s had issues running MW4 on Vista, your problem might be UAC. I’ve had it work to right-click on the installer exe and “Run as Administrator” (or just disable UAC).
Oh, also…+1 to the .torrent download idea. That’s how I get my Fedora DVD’s.
It’d be nice for a timeframe other than “soon”. I’m dyin’ f’r a good game right now!

You know…it’s sad that MekTek intends to bundle the games in one batch file to download. I just found my old Mercs discs a month back and thus would only want to download the Clan and IS mechpacks for online play and would only need to download Venge and Black Knight if I wanted to do some offline story missions…
ya im not thinking their bundle idea is so good. is btech going to do their own downloads or just use the download mektek puts together?
Im new to Battletech as well as knew to the Battletechunivers, ive been playing the MW:4 Mercs Demo for a while now and im waiting on MW:LL to come out. As far as MW:4 now being free… GIMME GIMME GIMME. 😛
I think it would be awesome if they turned the online play back on for this. My days of frustrating people in assault mechs with a Shadowcat can live again 😀

I am curious if MekTek will be able or allowed to remove the keys entirely… or maybe remove the keycheck for multiplayer? That might be easier.

I played all the Mechwarrior 4 demos to death unfortunatly by the time I could buy it the price had gone ridiculously high, now with it being released “soon” as a free download I will finally be able to play!
