Every year at GenCon I run a game called "Bring Me the Head of Neal". The premise is a notorious pirate, Neal, has a failed ejection and is trapped in his Mechs head.  Each year 4-5 teams with hidden victory conditions  fight it out.  Any minis you kill you keep, if you survive you keep your mini. prizes to the winning team.  The first two years were fought on a simple field, then I had it take place in a semi-dormant volcano.  ghis was followed by last years battle in a Disney style theme park (Neal's ex Girlfriend was trying to force a wedding, it didn't go well).

In the interests of trying to keep new and exciting fights this years fight will take place on the surface of a Jumpship!  Neo magnets will hold the mechs to the hull, and it will be a fully playable 3D environment.

I got the hexes drawn on today.

She stands about 4.5 feet high.  I wanted more of a cannon appearance but couldn't find anything metal with an 8 inch diameter that looked like the nose of a Starlord.

The hex stencil is by Litko and I penciled them on, it worked very well.

The house rules will let you drop off the horizon as you run around the ship, and fire while hanging upside down.

That thing is ingenious.  I wish I had one for Alpha Strike Games (wouldn't need Hex stencils).  Makes me wish I could attend the game just to participate in the fight.  Really cool concept for a recurring game.

So what is the base made out of, if it's magnetic?  Just steel sheet-metal 8" stove pipe?

It's all metal HVAC piping.  8inch diameter.

The original concept was to construct a plastic ship, and somehow magnetize it.  It quickly got incredible complicated and expensive.  I was at the Home Depot looking for options and this caught my eye.

The paint is just house paint, which has a million color options and is very affordable.

Well, as a thought for next time.  If you make a piece out of Wood (or a light wood frame), you could always just tack on plates of sheet metal (small sheet metal screws are your friend, and 26 gauge galvanized steel is cheap) . . . or if you're feeling rather proficient with JB-Weld you could just cut the sheet metal and epoxy it together (might want a thicker gauge for that).

However, either method is going to be exponentially more labor-intensive compared to what you did, but you could get some more distinct shapes out of it.  It would also be guaranteed to be magnetic.

I will be bringing Brynhildr to Historicon for a test of my house rules (the LOS gets weird when you are upside down on a curved surface).  I plan on running some games in the open gaming area Friday and Saturday.

Here are some pics from the 2 games I ran at GenCon.  Some how in the second game, in spite of having weapons fire on Turn 1, there was only 2 mechs KIA after 6 hours of fighting.

This is possibly one of the single coolest concepts I've seen executed for tabletop play...  although calling this tabletop anymore is kind of a stretch.

Thanks guys.  I try to come up with out of the box games.  I'm not sure if I am going to top this next year.
